Add images and your logo

Upload photos, what formats work and how to write good alt text.

Images do more for a small business website than any other single thing. Your hero, about, gallery, menu and product sections all support them, and so does your logo.

Uploading an image

  1. 1Find the image field in the section you are editing.
  2. 2Choose your file. It uploads and appears in the preview straight away.
  3. 3Add a short description of what is in the picture.
  4. 4Save your website.

What you can upload

  • JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and AVIF files.
  • Up to 4MB per image, and no more than 8000 pixels on either side.
  • Still images only. Animated GIFs and animated WebP files are not accepted.
  • SVG files are not accepted, because they can carry scripts and your images are served publicly.

What we do with your image

Every upload is converted to WebP in several sizes, so visitors on a phone are not made to download a huge file. Details hidden inside a photo, such as the location it was taken, are removed. We do not keep your original, so keep your own copy.

Choosing good images

  • Use clear, well-lit photos of your own business, products or work.
  • Landscape images work best in the hero and about sections.
  • The gallery is where a range of work reads well at a glance.
  • Your logo should have a transparent background - a PNG or WebP is usually right.
Tip: Describe each image in the alt text field. It is read aloud to visitors using a screen reader, it is what search engines understand the picture by, and it is what shows if the image ever fails to load.
